AN ENGLISH-SPEAKING WORLD

It is important that you make an effort to speak English because it is used by approximately I billion people. I believe it has become the language of the planet. There are about 2 700 languages in the world and in my opinion, English is the richest in vocabulary. The Oxford English Dictionary lists about 500 000words. About 350 million people use the English vocabulary as a mother tongue. Three quarters of the world’s mail, its telexes and cables are in English.

English is the medium for 80% of the information stored in the world’s computers. It is the official language of the Olympics and the Miss Universe Competition.

Over the last century, English has been used by 300 million people for whom it is not a native language. It has become a second language in countries like India, Kenya, Nigeria and Singapore. It is also used as a foreign language in Holland, to have contact with people in other countries, to promote trade and scientific progress and to the benefit of international communication generally.

One thing is certain: there will always be a need to speak English in any country of the world because it is the first truly global language.
